The records of 'Marvel's The Avengers'

Since it's release on May 4, 2012, Marvel's The Avengers has been setting records after records. First it set the opening weekend record by earning an impressive $207 million in its first 3-day weekend in theaters. Then it held the top spot consecutively for two weeks at the domestic box office, and then on its 19th day in theaters worldwide it joined the fabled $1 billion worldwide box office club becoming Disney's fifth billion-dollar movie following Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest ($1.066 billion), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.044 billion) and Alice in Wonderland ($1.024 billion).

The Avengers has also the records of being the fastest movie to reach $100, $200, $300, $400 and $500 million milestone at the domestic box office. Now in it's successful 40 days run in the cinemas worldwide, it has earned more than $1.4 million at the worldwide box office claiming the third position both in the domestic ($576 million) and worldwide ($1.4 billion) box office charts. Now it is competing against the new summer movies like Madagascar 3, Prometheus, Snow White and the Huntsman and Men in Black 3. If Avengers held its number of theaters by the end of this weekend as it is, it'll come closer to break the record of James Cameron's Titanic ($658 million) which is in the second position in US box office charts.

The studios behind the Avengers, Disney and Marvel, hope that their movie Avengers would break the Titanic records. If it fails to top Titanic, the studios have plans to claim the top spot by releasing a three-hour director's cut of the movie in August. It is also their other way to help push the release of The Avengers DVD on September 25th.
